Sutton Coldfield crash: Car hits mobility scooter and cars

Miraculous Escape After Car Causes Chaos on Birmingham Road

A driver sparked a frightening scene of destruction in Sutton Coldfield after losing control of their vehicle, hitting a mobility scooter, multiple cars, and street furniture in a dramatic crash. The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 26, shortly after 1.20pm on Birmingham Road in the Wylde Green area.

An eyewitness to the event expressed sheer disbelief at the outcome, stating they "do not know how anybody wasn’t injured or killed" given the scale of the collision.

Eyewitness Describes Terrifying Chain of Events

According to a man who was visiting friends in the area, the sequence of events began when the driver, believed to be behind the wheel of a silver 4x4, possibly a BMW, first struck an unoccupied mobility scooter.

"The driver hit a mobility scooter first, luckily the lady who owned it wasn't in it," the witness recounted. The vehicle then mounted the central reservation, setting off a chain reaction of impacts.

"[They] shunted four cars, smashed into large planters, into cars, hence the soil over the black Merc," he added, describing how the force of the crash covered a black Mercedes in soil from the shattered planters.

Concrete Bollard Prevents Greater Tragedy

The out-of-control car continued its path of destruction, narrowly avoiding a more serious incident. The vehicle careered towards a Betfred bookmakers shop, but its progress was finally halted by a concrete bollard.

"[The driver] was lucky the bollards stopped [them] hitting the Betfred shop," the witness confirmed. The crash left a trail of damaged bollards, planters, and a traffic light.

Emergency Services Respond to the Scene

West Midlands Police confirmed they were called to the scene. A police spokesman said: "We were called to Birmingham Road, Sutton Coldfield, shortly after 1.20pm yesterday (Wednesday) after a motorist struck several bollards and a traffic light. The driver was checked over, but there were no injuries."

In a testament to the miraculous nature of the incident, a spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service stated they were aware of the collision but were not required to attend, as there were no injuries reported.

The event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on the road, with the community left reflecting on a day that could have ended very differently.
