From Exam Struggles to Leadership Success
Jamie Skelding, a director at the prominent Prime Accountants Group, is commemorating four decades in his role, a milestone that coincides with his upcoming 60th birthday this year. His career nearly faltered at the outset when he failed his initial accountancy exams three times, an experience he describes as spectacular failure that left him fearing dismissal.
However, the firm, then known as Pilley and Florsham, recognised his potential and retained him. Jamie attributes his longevity to being a grafter and consistently exceeding expectations for clients. He progressed through the ranks, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1996, becoming a partner in 2000, and ascending to director in 2016.
Technological Transformation in Accounting
Reflecting on the evolution of his profession, Jamie highlights the dramatic technological changes since he started in 1986. He recalls early days with a single, room-sized computer that required booking slots, contrasting sharply with today's portable laptops and instant communication tools.
The biggest change has been technology and the speed of its development, he notes. Initially, accountants spent about 80% of time creating accounts, often wading through cardboard boxes. Now, the focus has shifted to analysing data and providing client insights, a shift Jamie finds more satisfying and valuable.

Jamie's journey includes stints in Prime's Coventry and former Leamington offices, with the latter featuring an outside toilet, underscoring how far workplace standards have advanced. He credits one-to-one training from a director early in his career for accelerating his exposure to diverse aspects of the business.
Today, as finance director with additional responsibilities for payroll and IT, and a board member of sister company Prime Wealth, Jamie oversees a team that includes individuals born after he started. He proudly mentions filing the first electronic corporation tax return, a pioneering achievement in his field.
