Van drivers are facing sky-high fuel costs, with annual bills reaching up to £1,750 for those covering 8,000 miles a year. New data from Money Super Market reveals that the UK's 4.5 million van drivers are travelling more miles than in previous years, exacerbating the impact of rising pump prices amid global economic challenges and the Iran war.
Rising Mileage and Fuel Costs
According to MoneySuperMarket, average mileage for van drivers has increased by 15% from 6,964 miles in 2022 to 8,018 miles in 2025. This trend, combined with petrol and diesel prices rising to as high as £1.91 per litre, is pushing annual fuel bills to an estimated £1,750 for a typical diesel van. The estimates are based on average mileage from van insurance policies bought with MoneySuperMarket between 2022 and 2026, fuel prices, and typical van fuel efficiency of 40mpg for diesel engines.
Expert Advice for Van Drivers
Alicia Hempsted, Van Insurance Expert at Money Super Market, commented: "Van drivers are currently dealing with a combination of rising fuel prices and increased mileage, both of which are pushing up overall running costs. For many tradespeople and small business owners, this has a direct impact on profitability, making it more important than ever to manage expenses carefully."
She added: "Using tools such as the fuel cost calculator can help drivers better understand how changes in pump prices affect spending on fuel. Even small price differences between local petrol stations can add up over time, so comparing fuel prices before filling up is a simple but effective way to reduce costs."
Government fuel costs are collected using live data from Money Super Market's fuel finder. The rising costs come as a law change is on the table for all drivers over age 70 after May 11, adding further pressure on motorists.
