Birmingham-based dairy-free chocolate brand Playin' Choc has secured a major retail listing with Marks & Spencer, with its products now available in 200 stores across the UK. The move marks a significant expansion for the company, which was founded by former footballer and entrepreneur Levi Bristow.
A Sweet Success Story
Playin' Choc, which launched in 2021, has quickly gained a following for its plant-based chocolate bars, which are free from dairy and suitable for vegans. The brand's range includes classic flavours such as Salted Caramel and Orange, as well as innovative options like Peanut Butter and Jelly.
The listing in M&S is a major coup for the Birmingham-based company, which has previously sold its products online and through independent retailers. The move into mainstream supermarkets is expected to significantly boost the brand's visibility and sales.
From Football to Chocolate
Levi Bristow, a former professional footballer who played for clubs including Aston Villa, founded Playin' Choc after struggling to find dairy-free chocolate that tasted good. He set out to create a product that would appeal to everyone, not just those with dietary restrictions.
"I'm absolutely delighted that Playin' Choc is now available in M&S stores across the country," said Bristow. "This is a huge milestone for us and a testament to the hard work of the whole team. We believe our chocolate is the best-tasting dairy-free option on the market, and we're excited to introduce it to a wider audience."
Expanding the Range
The M&S listing includes four of Playin' Choc's most popular flavours: Salted Caramel, Orange, Peanut Butter and Jelly, and Mint. Each bar is made with high-quality ingredients and contains no artificial additives.
The company has also announced plans to expand its range further, with new flavours and formats in development. In addition, Playin' Choc is committed to sustainability, using recyclable packaging and working with suppliers who share its ethical values.
The move into M&S is part of a broader trend of plant-based products gaining mainstream acceptance. According to recent industry data, the UK dairy-free chocolate market is growing rapidly, with sales increasing by more than 20% year on year.
Impact on the Local Economy
For Birmingham, the success of Playin' Choc is a boost for the local economy and a testament to the city's entrepreneurial spirit. The company, which is based in the Jewellery Quarter, has created jobs and is actively involved in the local community.
"We're proud to be a Birmingham business and to be flying the flag for the city on a national stage," added Bristow. "We hope our story inspires other young entrepreneurs to follow their dreams."
Playin' Choc products are now available in M&S stores nationwide, as well as online. The company is also planning to expand into other major retailers in the coming months.
