Electric vehicle drivers can reduce their car insurance costs by as much as £273 per year by bundling their policy into a salary sacrifice scheme, according to data from The Electric Car Scheme. The research shows that a typical electric car insurance policy would cost £650 per year, but lower-rate taxpayers could pay just £468 annually, while higher-rate taxpayers could pay only £377.
How Salary Sacrifice Cuts Insurance Costs
The Electric Car Scheme's analysis reveals that the way drivers pay for insurance significantly affects the overall cost. For basic-rate taxpayers (20% tax bracket), bundling insurance into a salary sacrifice arrangement results in a £182 annual saving, bringing the yearly cost down to £468. For higher-rate taxpayers (40% tax bracket), the saving increases to £273, with the annual premium dropping to £377.
Thom Groot, CEO of The Electric Car Scheme, said: "Insurance is the one running cost that has caught drivers out, because premiums are typically higher than petrol cars, and renewals have climbed just as people expected their EV to start saving them money."
Tax Benefits and Included Coverage
Groot added: "What tends to get missed is that how you pay for insurance matters as much as the premium itself. Bundled into salary sacrifice and paid from gross salary, the same policy costs a higher-rate taxpayer far less, which quietly turns the most awkward cost of going electric into one of the easiest."
The scheme bundles comprehensive car insurance into salary sacrifice arrangements, allowing employees to save on National Insurance and income tax on their insurance premiums. This creates tax efficiencies while simplifying budgeting with fixed monthly payments. The comprehensive insurance covers accidental damage, personal injury, property damage, stolen belongings, windscreen repair, fire and theft, and medical expenses, with all costs included in one pre-tax monthly payment.
Eligibility and Practical Considerations
To be eligible for salary sacrifice car insurance, drivers must be permanent UK residents, have no more than one at-fault claim within three years, and meet specific criteria regarding convictions. Courtesy cars are provided during repairs after accepted claims.
The Electric Car Scheme notes: "If your employer offers a salary sacrifice car scheme and you decide to take advantage of it, you can bundle costs like car insurance, maintenance, and breakdown cover into your monthly car payment. This allows you to benefit from salary sacrifice tax savings on all the additional expenses that come with leasing a car, making it more affordable."
