Giant Hoardings on Colmore Row Near Cathedral Explained

Towering hoardings have appeared on the corner of Colmore Row and Temple Row West in Birmingham, transforming the streetscape near St Philip's Cathedral. The large advertising boards cover a historic building undergoing a major transformation.

Historic Building Set for £19m Refurbishment

The former Phoenix Assurance Company building, constructed between 1915 and 1917, is at the heart of a £19 million refurbishment project. While it will retain its office space function, the development will add new features including Portland stone walls, a mansard roof, and a sixth-floor rooftop terrace. This will create approximately 1,124 square metres of additional floor space.

Location and Heritage

The building sits in a designated conservation area close to the Grade I-listed St Philip's Cathedral and the Town Hall. The architectural practice GPAD, which secured planning permission from Birmingham City Council, describes the project as a 'sensitive retrofit' that will 'celebrate the unique history of the site and surroundings' upon completion.

Design and Timeline

The refurbishment will feature a colour palette designed by artist and former Birmingham Post editor Stacey Barnfield. Construction firm Red has stated that the work should be completed by autumn. Until then, the towering hoardings will remain in place, altering the familiar view of this historic corner of the city centre.
