Octopus Energy Gains 500,000 Customers in First Half of 2026
Octopus Energy Adds 500,000 Customers in H1 2026

Octopus Energy has announced a significant milestone, having gained over 500,000 customers in the first half of 2026. This surge in switches cements its status as the UK's largest energy supplier, now powering almost 15 million meter points and accounting for approximately 26 per cent of Britain's home energy market.

Rapid Growth and Market Dominance

The company, which began just a decade ago, has seen remarkable expansion. With operations spanning 27 countries and the entire energy value chain, Octopus now serves 11 million households globally. This growth places it ahead of rivals such as EDF Energy, OVO Energy, EON Next, and British Gas.

Octopus Energy's success is attributed to its focus on smart tariffs and innovative clean technology, driving the electrification of heat and transport. The firm operates an £8.5 billion renewables portfolio, alongside thriving EV leasing, heat pump, and solar businesses.

Recognition and Customer Trust

Under the leadership of CEO Greg Jackson, Octopus has been named a Which? Recommended Provider for nine consecutive years. It also holds the highest Trustpilot and Glassdoor ratings among major UK energy suppliers, was named Britain's Most Admired Company in 2025, and made the Sunday Times Best Places to Work top 10 for 2026.

Greg Jackson commented: “Half a million homes have chosen Octopus already this year because they want an energy company that works harder for them. We’re humbled by the trust people have in us to deliver what matters most to them.”

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader

Reflecting on the journey, Jackson added: “It doesn’t feel that long ago that we were a small team squeezed into an office in Hammersmith. Today there are 12,000 of us looking after millions of customers, but our mindset and focus hasn’t changed: relentlessly driving fair prices, great service and technologies that help cut bills for families and businesses.”

This announcement comes alongside other news, including a student loan debt update for 6 million Plan 2 students by John Healey. However, Octopus Energy's growth story remains a standout in the energy sector, showcasing the potential for customer-centric innovation to reshape the market.
