Supermarket Petrol Prices Vary: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda

Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Asda drivers have been warned that petrol prices can vary significantly from store to store. This week, petrol prices have been approaching the 159.0p-per-litre high seen in mid-April, which was the highest average pump price in three and a half years.

Price Comparisons

Compared to the same time last year, petrol is now 26p per litre more expensive. GoCompare explained that fuel prices vary nationwide due to several factors, including proximity to fuel sources and delivery costs. Local competition also plays a crucial role, especially the presence of supermarkets with petrol stations. Areas with multiple large supermarkets tend to have lower fuel prices.

Unlike groceries, supermarkets do not have a national pricing policy for fuel. This means prices can differ from one store to another, even within the same chain.

Supermarket Responses

Tesco confirmed that they do not have a single national price for fuel but stated they "work hard to be competitive in all areas." Sainsbury's added: "We aim to make sure each Sainsbury's petrol station is competitive in its local area, so prices are set using locally gathered pricing information. That's why you may sometimes see different prices at nearby stations, even if they're owned by the same company."

Expert Advice

Lee Morley, AA expert patrol, commented: "When good weather arrives after an unsettled spell, people are often more willing to make spontaneous plans, so drivers should expect popular routes to get busy quickly." He also noted: "Fuel prices remain a real pressure on household budgets, so drivers will also want to make every litre count. Shopping around before filling up, avoiding unnecessary weight, keeping tyres properly inflated, and driving smoothly can all help keep costs down." Drivers can also use the AA App to find cheaper fuel en route, helping them avoid paying over the odds while away.
