Joao Gomes is leaving Wolves' training camp in Portugal to complete a move to Aston Villa in a deal worth around £35 million, BirminghamLive can exclusively reveal. Talks between the two clubs have progressed quickly, with Gomes saying his goodbyes to his teammates ahead of finalising a switch to Unai Emery's side.
Medical and contract expected soon
The 25-year-old is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days before signing his contract with Villa. Atletico Madrid had previously shown interest in Gomes, but a potential move to the Spanish capital has been off the table for the past month.
Villa's midfield revamp
Villa's move for the Brazilian comes after Amadou Onana suffered an ACL injury and following Youri Tielemans' £35 million transfer to Manchester United. Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in the summer of 2023, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract at Molineux. During his time at the club, he made 130 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing six assists.
Additional transfer activity
Meanwhile, Villa are also hoping to complete the signing of Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg before the end of the week, in an exciting move, securing one of the most promising young midfielders to emerge from Germany.
