Workers are putting the finishing touches on a major renovation of The Boat, a 200-year-old Grade-II listed pub in Wednesfield that had been closed by police six years ago due to drug-related issues. The pub, which overlooks the Wyrley & Essington Canal, will reopen in August as a desi mixed grill restaurant, thanks to an investment of around £300,000.
From Trouble To Transformation
The Boat had stood empty for six years, but new owner Avtar Singh, known locally as Goldie, saw potential in the historic building. He told BirminghamLive that the pub was previously shut down by police because of persistent drug problems. Now, Goldie is bringing 'something special' to the town with the new venture.
Renovation work began in January, with careful attention to preserving the building's character while modernising its interior. The project has involved redecorating, installing plush new toilets, and adding murals of famous Punjabi singers, including a tribute to Sidhu Moose Wala, the renowned Punjabi rapper who died in 2022.
A Blend Of Cultures
The new restaurant will retain the pub's historic charm, blending old features with contemporary design. Upstairs, the interior combines traditional elements with new decor. Goldie plans to add more murals, including those of Western artists, to create a unique cultural fusion.
The Boat's new menu will focus on desi mixed grill dishes, a popular cuisine in the West Midlands. The exact opening date in August has yet to be announced, but the transformation is nearly complete.
Community Impact
Wednesfield residents have watched the pub's revival with interest. The building, which sits along the canal, is one of the town's oldest pubs and had fallen into disrepair. The renovation is expected to bring new life to the area, attracting customers from across Wolverhampton.
