The Department for Work and Pensions' (DWP) new regional headquarters at 1 Pilgrim Place in Newcastle city centre has reached a significant construction milestone, with just eight months remaining until its official launch. The building, part of one of the largest office developments ever constructed in the city centre, will become home to thousands of civil servants and marks a key step in the wider regeneration of Pilgrim Street.
Partners Gather to Mark Shell Completion
Representatives from all project partners, including the DWP, Reuben Brothers (Newcastle) Ltd, Bowmer + Kirkland, Avison Young, Ryder Architecture, Cundall, and Newcastle City Council, visited the site to commemorate the completion of the building's shell. 1 Pilgrim Place is one of three planned developments in the heart of Newcastle under the Pilgrim's Quarter scheme. While 1 Pilgrim Place will serve as the DWP's regional base, 2 Pilgrim Place is being marketed by property agents as offering "sustainable, best-in-class office accommodation." The third building, part of the wider masterplan, will host thousands of HMRC staff, further cementing the area as a major government hub.
The 7.9-hectare site is a cornerstone of one of the UK's most ambitious city-centre regeneration programmes. Neighbouring projects, including Hotel Gotham Newcastle, Worswick Chambers (now home to Stack), and Bank House, are transforming the area into a vibrant mixed-use district. Both 1 and 2 Pilgrim Place are scheduled for completion in April 2027.
