Man Utd target Rogers as Fernandes successor, Villa resist

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers is attracting interest from Manchester United, who view him as a potential long-term successor to club captain Bruno Fernandes. Rogers has drawn attention from several clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, but Villa are prepared to fight to retain the England international.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are considering Rogers as part of a midfield overhaul. The 23-year-old is seen as a player who can operate off the left wing, but also as a long-term replacement for Fernandes in the number 10 role.

Rogers' Impact at Aston Villa

Since joining from Championship side Middlesbrough in January 2024, Rogers has been a key player for Villa. In the recently concluded season, he scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions, helping Unai Emery's side finish fourth in the Premier League and win the Europa League trophy.

His performances earned him a place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the upcoming World Cup in North America. He will feature in friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica before England's opening match against Croatia on 17 June.

Villa's Determination to Keep Rogers

Villa chiefs are monitoring Rogers' progress closely. The Telegraph reports that Villa hope to 'resist offers' for the midfielder and have no intention of selling him, especially with the club preparing for a return to the Champions League.

Rogers' situation is complicated by a sell-on clause held by Middlesbrough. The Championship side included a 20 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that saw Rogers move to Villa Park for an initial £8 million, with up to £7 million more in add-ons. This clause is likely to increase Villa's asking price, with Arsenal also showing strong interest.

Emery's Comments on Rogers

Responding to transfer speculation last month, Unai Emery emphasized Rogers' focus and versatility. 'He is focused. He is here with us for two years, and he is being consistent,' Emery said. 'He is playing consistently and demanding. As well, he knows how he is getting his progress and how the team needs him playing in different positions. He is versatile, playing on the left or in the number 10 as a second striker. He can play good or bad on the left side, or play good or bad in the middle or on the right.'
