Mayor Andy Street has officially opened the new AC Hotel by Marriott at Birmingham NEC and Airport, a development set to boost the region's hospitality capacity as Birmingham Airport gears up for its busiest summer on record. The 150-bedroom hotel, part of a £15 million investment, will provide accommodation for business and leisure travellers visiting the NEC and the airport.
A Strategic Addition to the Region
The AC Hotel by Marriott, located on the Birmingham Business Park, offers modern amenities including a restaurant, bar, fitness centre, and flexible meeting spaces. According to the hotel management, the property is designed to cater to the growing demand for quality accommodations near the airport and exhibition centre. Mayor Andy Street commented, "This fantastic new hotel is a vote of confidence in our region and will help us welcome even more visitors to Birmingham."
Birmingham Airport's Record Summer
The opening comes as Birmingham Airport forecasts its busiest summer ever, with an estimated 3.7 million passengers passing through its terminals between June and September. This represents a significant increase from pre-pandemic levels, driven by new routes and expanded capacity. The airport has added services to popular destinations such as Dubai, Orlando, and various European cities. Airport CEO Nick Barton said, "We are thrilled with the growth and partnership with Marriott, which enhances the passenger experience."
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The hotel has created over 50 new jobs, with further opportunities expected as occupancy ramps up. Local businesses are also set to benefit from increased footfall. The mayor highlighted that the development aligns with the West Midlands Combined Authority's goals for economic growth and tourism. "Investments like this show that Birmingham is open for business," Street added.
Sustainability and Design
The AC Hotel by Marriott incorporates sustainable design elements, including energy-efficient lighting and water-saving fixtures. The building has achieved a BREEAM rating of 'Very Good'. The hotel's interior reflects the brand's minimalist European aesthetic, with local art and materials used throughout.
Future Outlook
With the NEC hosting major events and the airport expanding, the hotel is poised for high demand. Marriott International plans to leverage its global loyalty programme to attract international visitors. The development also complements other recent investments in the area, such as the HS2 interchange station and new retail outlets. As Birmingham continues to strengthen its position as a key business and leisure destination, the AC Hotel by Marriott stands as a symbol of the region's post-pandemic recovery and ambition.
