Leading property consultancy Avison Young has marked 150 years of operations in Newcastle and the North East by launching a new city centre office. The firm, which has been involved in major regional projects including Forth Yards, Pilgrim Street regeneration, and Founder's Place, has relocated from Central Square South to Wellbar on Gallowgate, adjacent to St James' Park.
New office details
The company has signed a 10-year lease for a 4,400 sq ft space on the eighth floor of Wellbar, offering panoramic south-facing views over Newcastle. The office accommodates 30 staff and reflects Avison Young's confidence in the region's future growth. Wellbar is owned by Reuben Brothers, and Avison Young supported the billionaire real estate firm in acquiring the building for around £21 million in December 2023. The firm also manages the building, providing front-of-house staff and professional services. Other tenants include Sky, Irwin Mitchell, Eversheds, and Kennedys.
150-year legacy
The move coincides with Avison Young's 150th anniversary in Newcastle, tracing its roots back to 1876 when it was founded as Lamb and Edge. The firm originally managed the Grainger Estate in Grainger Town and has since played a central role in shaping Newcastle's built environment through industrial growth, post-war regeneration, and modern transformation.
Gordon Hewling, managing director of the Newcastle office and principal in building and project consultancy, said: “This move represents much more than a new office for us – it’s a really important moment in a 150‑year relationship with Newcastle and the North East. We’ve grown alongside the city through industrial expansion, post‑war reinvention and into the modern, outward‑looking regional centre it is today, and we’re incredibly proud of the role we’ve played in shaping that journey.”
Commitment to the region
Hewling added: “Moving into our new home in a building we manage on behalf of a long‑standing client is a powerful reflection of who we are as a business and how we work. Being just five minutes from Grey’s Monument and Eldon Square puts us at the heart of the city, in an area set to see more change over the next decade. As we look ahead, this move is about carrying that legacy forward: continuing to support growth, attract investment and help shape places where people, businesses and communities can thrive. We’re excited about the next chapter.”
Avison Young's new office underscores its long-term commitment to the North East and its role in shaping the region's future development.
