Tesco is testing a major change to its coffee machines in Express stores, with the new Finest To-Go machines now available in two locations. The trial gives shoppers the chance to buy a hot drink from the retailer's own-brand range while they shop, with branches in Birmingham among those participating.
What the Finest To-Go machines offer
The Finest To-Go machines offer a selection of classic hot beverages, including Americano, Flat White, Latte, Cappuccino, Espresso, Mocha, Hot Chocolate and Breakfast Tea. According to Tesco, the machines use the same coffee beans that the retailer uses in its Tesco Cafes and Coffee Shops.
The medium-roast blend is roasted in the UK and Rainforest Alliance certified, with a well-rounded balance of chocolate and nutty flavours. Small drinks from the machines are also included in the Tesco Meal Deal, giving customers another way to enjoy a hot drink as part of their lunch or snack purchase.
Retail expert's reaction and Costa partnership
Retail expert Bryan Roberts shared the news on LinkedIn, describing the equipment as “really impressive”. He said: “Makes a change from the usual suspects in c-store coffee solutions, offers Tesco a bit of differentiation, possibly opens a new growth opportunity for Finest – already a £3bn brand – and, importantly, the double espresso was jolly nice.”
The trial does not mean Tesco has abandoned its longstanding partnership with Costa Coffee. Self-served Costa drinks can also be included in the supermarket’s ‘meal deal’ at participating stores. Tesco expanded that choice in July by adding 16 iced Costa beverages during the summer heatwave.
Previous coffee options and trial details
Tesco has previously given customers the chance to caffeinate with Costa Express machines available at over 2,800 locations. The retailer has not yet revealed how long the Finest trial will run or whether the machines could be introduced at more stores.
