In a significant milestone for the Welsh automotive sector, family-owned dealership Nathaniel Cars has sold its 20,000th new MG vehicle as the company accelerates its expansion plans across South Wales.
A Decade of Remarkable Growth
The landmark sale comes just ten years after the business, originally founded in Bridgend in 1980, took on the MG franchise. Nathaniel Cars has transformed from a modest operation with 43 staff selling 1,000 new and used cars annually into a major employer with 200 people across four locations - Bridgend, Cardiff, Cwmbran and Swansea.
The company's annual sales now exceed 8,000 vehicles, reflecting its substantial market presence. After generating sales of £110m last year, the firm is projecting revenues will reach £125m this year, demonstrating consistent financial growth.
Personal Triumph and Business Partnership
The relationship with MG began during a period of personal challenge for company director Nathan Griffiths, who returned to the business following successful treatment for stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. "The month I came back, that was when we took on MG," Mr Griffiths recalled. "It gave me something to fight for, it gave me a purpose. MG didn't just change our business, but it changed my life as well."
Reflecting on their journey, he added: "What we've achieved in the time since is more than a growth in numbers. It's been a journey that illustrates mutual trust with our customers, a sense of shared values, and the importance of a strong, Welsh heart to our business."
Future Expansion and European Ambitions
The company's growth strategy continues with the recent acquisition of an 8-acre site in Bridgend that will serve as a preparation centre, creating an additional 50 jobs in the local area.
Looking ahead, Nathan Griffiths revealed ambitious plans: "For us the future means looking beyond borders to compete at a European level," signalling the company's intention to expand its operations internationally.
Wayne Griffiths, who established the business 45 years ago and continues to work alongside his son, emphasised their enduring values: "Family, loyalty, and looking after people, those are the values that guided us then, and they continue guide us now. MG shares those values, and that's why our partnership endures."
William Wang, managing director of MG Motor UK, praised the partnership: "Over the past decade, Nathaniel MG has become more than just a top dealer; they have become a partner we trust and are deeply embedded in the MG story. Their commitment to Welsh communities, customer care, and growth has helped MG flourish in a competitive market."
The success of Nathaniel Cars mirrors MG's own resurgence in the UK market, where the brand is now the number one best-selling car in Wales and ranks 12th overall across the UK.
