Jen Heal Named New CEO of Design Commission for Wales

New Leadership for Wales' Design Champion

The Design Commission for Wales (DCFW), the advisory body promoting design excellence across the built environment, has announced its new chief executive. Jen Heal will take up the role in January 2025, succeeding Carole-Ann Davies.

Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning Rebecca Evans confirmed the appointment, which sees Heal promoted from her position as deputy chief executive, a role she has held since April 2023.

A Wealth of Experience in Planning and Design

Ms Heal brings substantial professional expertise to the position. A chartered town planner with a background in planning and urban design, she first joined the commission in 2014 as a design advisor.

During her tenure, her responsibilities have included:

  • Delivering specialist training and professional guidance
  • Providing client support
  • Co-chairing the national design review service
  • Serving as commissioner for the South East Wales Transport Commission

Driving Economic and Social Value Through Design

Ms Evans expressed her delight at the appointment, stating: "Her exceptional expertise and commitment to design excellence will strengthen our efforts to create thriving communities across Wales." She emphasised that good design is fundamental to placemaking, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

Ewan Jones, chair of the DCFW board, welcomed the announcement, highlighting Heal's "passionate advocacy for the difference good design makes to wellbeing and everyday lives." He noted her collaborative abilities and respected relationships across policymakers, designers, and clients would lead the commission into a new era.

Ms Heal commented on her vision for the role: "Design is pivotal to creating places where people, the environment, and the economy can thrive." She aims to expand the commission's influence by developing a stronger regional presence and strengthening its leadership in the national conversation on place design.

The DCFW was established in 2002 by the Welsh Government as a public body. It works with the Cardiff Bay administration to develop design-related policy and supports both public and private sector organisations in delivering well-designed buildings, places, and public spaces.
