Northern Lithium Targets £3m Investment Ahead of £30m Fundraising Round

Northern Lithium, a UK-based lithium developer, is set to secure £3 million from wealthy backers and retail investors in preparation for a larger £30 million fundraising effort later this year. The company focuses on extracting lithium from the Ludwell Farm site in County Durham, part of the North Pennine Orefield, to support domestic production and reduce Britain's dependence on overseas imports.

Funding Details and Development Plans

Nick Pople, managing director of Northern Lithium, confirmed that the initial £3 million will come from existing shareholders and new high-net-worth individuals, with an imminent Crowdcube campaign also planned. This funding is expected to accelerate the company's development programme for the second half of 2026. Pople added that a financing package of approximately £30 million is needed later this year to construct the plant required for first commercial production at Ludwell Farm.

Company Background and Support

Established in 2017 by the late Richard Morecombe, former president of Panmure Liberum, Northern Lithium has attracted backing from prominent City figures such as Rich Ricci and Martin Gilbert. The company is among a select group aiming to produce lithium domestically, aligning with government goals to enhance UK self-sufficiency in critical minerals.

Lithium Demand and UK Strategy

Lithium is a highly sought-after commodity in the 21st century, essential for powering electric vehicles, laptops, and smartphones. The UK government projects that annual domestic demand for lithium will increase by 1,100% by 2035. Currently, the UK imports all its lithium from abroad, but the Critical Minerals Strategy, released in November, sets a target to produce 50,000 tonnes of lithium on home soil. Northern Lithium's tests at Ludwell Farm have shown commercially viable quantities of lithium in the region.

Production Goals and Impact

Northern Lithium aims to begin commercial production at Ludwell Farm in 2027, with initial output of around 500 tonnes per year. The company plans to scale up to over 20,000 tonnes annually by 2035, potentially supplying 25% of national demand. Pople cited the recent rebound in lithium prices, government support through the critical minerals strategy, and positive progress in fundraising as factors positioning the company favourably for future growth.

He expressed high confidence in attracting the necessary equity investment to achieve first commercial production by the end of 2027 and expand operations thereafter. This initiative highlights the growing importance of domestic lithium production in meeting future energy and technology needs.
