Asda Rolls Out New £12.71 Minimum Wage Across All UK Stores
Asda has officially implemented a new £12.71 minimum wage rule across all its UK stores, effective from today, April 1, 2026. This significant change is set to benefit thousands of hourly-paid colleagues working in Asda Retail and Asda Express locations nationwide.
Two-Stage Pay Rise Investment
The supermarket announced that the pay increase represents a substantial £80 million investment in its workforce. The first stage of the pay rise sees employees' hourly rates elevated to £12.71, with those working inside the M25 receiving an even higher rate of £13.93. This move is part of a broader two-stage pay rise strategy designed to support staff amid economic pressures.
James Goodman, Chief People Officer at Asda, emphasized the importance of store-based colleagues, stating: "Our store‑based colleagues are at the core of our business and the role they play serving customers is central to our Formula for Growth turnaround plan. I’m pleased we’ve been able to give them an above‑inflation pay award and invest in this way." Goodman also thanked colleagues for their continued hard work and commitment to improving Asda daily.
Second Stage and Broader Context
A second stage of pay rises is scheduled for July 5, 2026, which will further increase colleagues' pay to £13.10 per hour, with those inside the M25 receiving £14.35. Since TDR Capital and the Issa brothers acquired Asda in 2021, the company has invested a total of £575 million in retail pay, highlighting a long-term commitment to employee welfare.
This development comes as other retailers, such as Primark, also implement pay increases. Primark has raised its UK employees' hourly rates to £13, with London workers earning £13.71. Kari Rodgers, UK Retail Director at Primark, commented on the importance of recognizing colleagues' hard work in an increasingly demanding retail environment.
The new Asda rule underscores a trend in the retail sector towards higher wages, aiming to attract and retain talent while supporting workers' financial stability. This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on employee morale and customer service across Asda's extensive network of stores.
