DWP Announces Extension for ESA Claimants to Switch to Universal Credit

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a crucial update regarding the phasing out of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), one of the so-called legacy benefits set to be scrapped in a sweeping welfare reform. This move is part of a broader transition to Universal Credit (UC), which is replacing multiple older benefit systems.

Deadline Extended for Vulnerable Claimants

In a significant development, the DWP has extended the deadline for ESA claimants to apply for Universal Credit, providing more time for preparation. This decision comes after hundreds of thousands of people lost their payments by failing to apply in time during the initial switchover phases. Officials stated that the extension aims to offer greater assurance to vulnerable ESA claimants, who may face challenges in navigating the transition process.

ESA is currently paid to over a million individuals with disabilities or health conditions that affect their ability to work. The transition to UC is not automatic; claimants must actively apply to avoid losing their benefits. The DWP emphasized that this step is necessary to ensure a smooth migration to the new system.

Success of the Move to Universal Credit Campaign

According to the DWP, the migration campaign from legacy benefits to Universal Credit recommenced in May 2022 and has already helped move over 1.9 million people. This includes 135,000 claimants of Income Support and income-related Jobseeker’s Allowance, which are also being axed. The department highlighted that Universal Credit better reflects today’s labour market and provides a range of support to help people move closer to or into work.

Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms, commented on the campaign's success, stating, "Our Move to Universal Credit campaign has been successful in moving over 1.9 million people from legacy benefits to the modern Universal Credit system. Vulnerable customers have been at the forefront of this campaign. In their interests, we are extending the deadline for income-related Employment Support Allowance claimants to move over."

Implications for Claimants

The extension offers a lifeline to ESA claimants, many of whom rely on these payments for essential living costs. However, it is critical for individuals to act promptly and apply for Universal Credit to prevent any disruption in their benefits. The DWP's update serves as a reminder of the ongoing changes in the welfare system, urging claimants to stay informed and take necessary steps to secure their financial support.

This overhaul marks a significant shift in how benefits are administered in the UK, with Universal Credit designed to streamline support and align with contemporary employment trends. As the deadline approaches, claimants are encouraged to seek guidance and ensure they complete the application process to maintain their eligibility for assistance.
