HMRC Urges Parents Earning Under £100k to Claim £2,000 Childcare Support
HMRC Urges Parents to Claim £2,000 Childcare Support

HMRC is actively encouraging parents with household incomes below £100,000 to claim substantial financial support through the Government's Tax-Free Childcare scheme, which can provide up to £2,000 per child each year. According to money expert Martin Lewis, approximately 800,000 eligible parents are currently missing out on this valuable boost to their finances, highlighting a significant awareness gap.

How the Tax-Free Childcare Scheme Works

The scheme is designed to assist working parents with childcare expenses, covering services such as nurseries, childminders, after-school clubs, and holiday care. For every £8 that parents deposit into a dedicated Tax-Free Childcare account, HMRC adds a £2 top-up, effectively providing a 25% government contribution. This results in a maximum of £500 every three months per child, totaling £2,000 annually for children under the age of 11.

Enhanced Support for Disabled Children

Parents of disabled children can access even greater support, with the scheme offering up to £1,000 every three months, which amounts to £4,000 per year for children up to the age of 16. This additional funding can be used not only for extra childcare hours but also to pay for specialist equipment, such as mobility aids, through approved childcare providers.

Eligibility and Application Process

Martin Lewis has emphasized that the application process is straightforward, typically taking around 30 minutes to complete, and can make a substantial difference to monthly household budgets. However, it is important to note that parents cannot apply if they are already receiving certain benefits, including Universal Credit, Child Tax Credit, or Working Tax Credit.

HMRC recently issued a reminder via social media, posting on X: "With Tax-Free Childcare, working parents could save up to £2,000 per year per child up to the age of 11, or £4,000 for disabled children up to the age of 16. Thousands of providers now accept Tax-Free Childcare as payment, which you could use towards childminders for term time, wraparound care, and even holiday clubs and workshops to keep the little ones busy during the school holidays."

The tax authority urges eligible parents to visit the GOV.UK website, search for "Tax-Free Childcare," and check their eligibility to apply promptly, ensuring they do not miss out on this critical financial assistance.
