Midlands Company Fined £30,000 After Worker Crushed by Concrete Block
A Midlands-based company has been fined £30,000 following a horrific workplace incident where a worker was crushed under a one-tonne concrete block, resulting in life-changing injuries that required amputation of his left foot and lower leg.
Devastating Incident at Redditch Firm
The incident occurred on December 14, 2023, at BA Mobile Fleet Services Limited, located in Redditch. The 35-year-old father of two was working inside an HGV box trailer that was being loaded with concrete blocks in preparation for a Driver Vehicle Standards Agency brake test.
At the time of the accident, the man was 33 years old and had been inside the trailer with a colleague while a third worker operated a forklift truck to load the blocks. During this process, the forklift truck reportedly 'nudged' a stack of blocks inside the trailer, causing them to topple onto the man's legs.
Life-Changing Injuries and Job Loss
The injuries sustained were catastrophic. The man's left foot and lower leg had to be amputated due to the severity of the crushing injuries, while he also sustained serious injuries to his right leg. In a further blow, the worker was dismissed from his position at the company following the incident.
Health and Safety Investigation Findings
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that BA Mobile Fleet Services Limited had failed to implement appropriate safety measures to separate workers from moving vehicles on site. The investigation specifically identified that the company had not provided proper training to the forklift driver and had not authorized him to operate such vehicles.
HSE inspector Emma Page commented on the case, stating: "The injuries sustained here by this young man have been truly life-changing. Too many people are injured or killed every year in workplace transport related incidents. Companies should do all they can to ensure all workers go home safely to their families at the end of each day. We will take action against those who fail to do so."
Legal Proceedings and Penalties
BA Mobile Fleet Services Limited pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act. At a hearing at Kidderminster Magistrates Court on Wednesday, April 15, the company was fined £30,000 and ordered to pay £4,325 in costs.
The case highlights the critical importance of workplace safety protocols and proper equipment operation training in industrial settings. The HSE continues to emphasize that companies must prioritize worker safety to prevent such devastating incidents from occurring.
