UK households warned of £183 charge, advised to switch broadband

UK households have been warned that millions are facing a new annual charge of nearly £200 by failing to switch broadband providers, according to fresh research from Broadband Genie. The findings come as households face mounting inflation and another possible cost of living crisis driven by higher energy costs.

How to save £183.60 a year

Broadband expert Alex Tofts from Broadband Genie explained that customers pay an average of £30.84 per month and could save £183.60 annually by switching providers. He noted that many people avoid switching due to perceived hassle, but the 'One Touch Switch' process introduced in 2024 simplifies the process: customers only need to contact the new provider, who handles cancellation and transfer.

Negotiate with your current provider

Even those satisfied with their current service can save money by negotiating. Tofts advised: "A bit of old-fashioned haggling can often see a provider lower their prices just to keep you as a customer." Consumers should check if their contract has expired, as nearly nine million broadband customers are out of contract and free to switch, with almost 25,000 people ending their contracts daily.

Tofts emphasised: "UK households are once again coming under more and more pressure. Mortgage rates are up, prices at the pumps are up, and inflation could soon increase the cost of countless other everyday purchases. Against this backdrop, every penny really does count, and one easy way to make savings instantly is by switching broadband provider."
