All UK households with a summer holiday booked are being urged to check for a crucial piece of paper: a receipt. Tom Vaughan, a travel insurance specialist at Confused.com, has issued a vital warning for holidaymakers planning to travel in the coming months.
Flight Disruptions and Passenger Rights
Vaughan explained that flight cancellations and delays could occur as airlines face operational pressures. He reminded travellers that UK passengers have rights if their flight is cancelled, including the right to a refund or an alternative flight, even for non-refundable tickets.
Essential Advice for Holidaymakers
Vaughan recommends keeping receipts for essential costs such as food, accommodation, and transport, as these expenses may be reimbursed. For those who booked a package holiday, he advises checking if it is ATOL protected and contacting the travel provider for support.
Additionally, paying by credit card may offer extra protection. Vaughan stresses the importance of taking out travel insurance before departure, as insurers can guide claimants through the process and may cover other affected parts of the holiday.
Inflation Context
The warning comes as the Office for National Statistics reported that the consumer prices index rose to 3% in March, above the government's 2% target. This economic backdrop may influence travel costs and airline operations.
