In a significant boost for the regional economy, upmarket supermarket chain Waitrose has unveiled plans to open a major new distribution centre in Bristol, creating more than 550 new jobs.
A Major Investment in the South West
The new facility, which will be operated by logistics giant DHL, represents a key part of Waitrose's ambitious, multi-year £1 billion investment programme to transform its supply chain. The 360,000 sq ft centre is scheduled to become operational in early 2027.
Recruitment for the vast majority of the new positions will begin this spring. DHL is seeking to hire 480 warehouse colleagues and 80 drivers to staff the state-of-the-art site. The centre is strategically positioned to make deliveries more efficient for Waitrose's 50 existing shops across the South West and to support the retailer's future expansion plans in the region.
Designed with Sustainability at its Core
The Bristol distribution centre has been designed with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility. Its roof will be fitted with 1,200 solar panels, and the building will incorporate energy-efficient systems, maximise natural light, and feature landscaped gardens and a roof terrace.
These green credentials have earned the project an 'Outstanding' rating under the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). Waitrose estimates the new site will help slash annual mileage within its supply chain, reducing carbon emissions by 2,225 tonnes of CO2 per year—equivalent to taking more than 1,500 vehicles off the road annually.
Strengthening the Supply Chain for Growth
Alison Maffin, Waitrose’s Supply Chain Director, emphasised the centre's role in the company's growth strategy. "As we grow, it’s essential that our supply chain grows with us," she said. "This new site strengthens our network, ensuring consistent service for our customers and creating over 550 jobs in a state-of-the-art facility."
She also highlighted the shared values with their logistics partner, noting, "DHL shares our commitment to sustainable logistics, making them the perfect partner for this next phase of our expansion."
Martin Willmor, CEO of DHL Supply Chain UK & Ireland, echoed this sentiment: "We are excited to be working with Waitrose as they expand their regional presence while reducing supply chain emissions. The new Bristol site reflects our shared commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, whilst supporting the community."
This major development is part of a wider investment by Waitrose, which also includes upgrading all 317 of its stores and deploying new AI technology, such as customer demand forecasting tools, as it aims to cement its position as a leading UK grocer.
