Major Banking Shake-Up: 168 Branches to Close Across UK
The Lloyds Banking Group has unveiled plans to shut down 168 branches of its Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands, with six of these closures impacting Birmingham directly. This significant reduction in physical banking locations is set to occur over 2026 and 2027, building on a previous announcement made on February 11, which detailed 95 further closures.
Breakdown of the Closures
The closures are distributed across the three banking brands under the Lloyds umbrella. Specifically, Lloyds will see 94 branches closed or closing, including 53 that were announced recently. Halifax is set to lose 46 branches, with 31 of those part of the latest update. Bank of Scotland will close 28 branches, 11 of which were included in the February announcement.
All three banks are part of the same financial group, allowing customers to use any of their branches for everyday banking services such as cash deposits, withdrawals, and cheque payments. This interoperability is intended to mitigate some of the inconvenience caused by the closures.
Impact on Birmingham and Alternative Solutions
In Birmingham, the affected branches include Lloyds locations at Bordesley Green, Hawkhurst Road, High Street in B17, High Street in B65, and Kingstanding Road, as well as a Halifax branch on Bearwood Road. These closures are part of a broader trend reducing physical banking presence nationwide.
Martin Lewis' team at Money Saving Expert has advised affected customers to utilise Banking Hubs, which are community-based alternatives. As of February 11, there are 214 hubs operational across the UK, with an additional 58 recommended for establishment. These hubs provide a shared space for multiple banks, offering basic services without full counter facilities.
Additionally, the group suggests checking for 'community banker' visits in local areas. These bankers operate from dedicated office spaces in venues like community centers, providing private support for account enquiries, though they do not handle cash transactions.
List of Key Closure Locations
The closures span numerous towns and cities beyond Birmingham. Notable examples include:
- Lloyds: Branches in Aberdare, Alfreton, Altrincham, Bristol, Cardiff, London (multiple locations), Manchester, and more.
- Halifax: Locations in Armthorpe, Ashington, Billingham, Croydon, Leeds, Liverpool, and various parts of London.
- Bank of Scotland: Branches in Aberdeen, Alexandria, Glasgow, Haddington, and St Andrews, among others.
Specific closure dates range from early 2026 to mid-2027, with many set for June 2026. Customers are encouraged to verify their local branch's status and explore digital banking options or the aforementioned alternatives to ensure uninterrupted access to financial services.
This move reflects a broader shift in the banking industry towards digitalisation, but it raises concerns about access for those reliant on in-person services, particularly in underserved communities.
