The Department for Work and Pensions has identified seven health conditions most likely to qualify state pensioners for Attendance Allowance, with payments reaching nearly £115 a week. Official caseload figures show these top conditions account for 1,069,501 of the 1.4 million total people receiving the benefit across Great Britain.
Top conditions and claimant numbers
Arthritis leads the list with 416,313 claimants, followed by dementia with 148,337. Heart disease accounts for 103,330 claimants, while respiratory conditions affect 85,674 recipients. Other qualifying conditions include diseases of the muscles, bones or joints (72,070), cerebrovascular disease (68,071), and back pain (62,211).
Attendance Allowance is paid at two rates. The lower rate of £76.70 per week applies to those needing help during either the day or night. The higher rate of £114.60 per week is for individuals requiring assistance throughout both day and night, or for those with 12 months or less to live according to a medical professional.
Understanding the eligibility criteria
The benefit helps with extra costs if you have a disability or health condition severe enough that you need someone to help look after you. It operates similarly to Personal Independence Payment but is specifically for people of state pension age.
Money Saving Expert, the site founded by BBC and ITV star Martin Lewis, clarified what constitutes help. The 54-year-old said: "'Help' means needing assistance with daily activities." Examples include help getting washed or dressed, help eating, help going to or using the toilet, and help telling people what you need or making yourself understood.
Lewis added: "Back in 1981, Lord Denning (Master of the Rolls, a high-ranking judge) gave a definition of 'bodily functions' that's still used today to help explain what assistance with daily living means in practice (albeit in outdated language for today)."
Claimant success story
