Drivers across the UK have been issued a stark warning as Asda has raised petrol prices faster than any other major retailer since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East. A new analysis reveals that the supermarket giant has increased the price of petrol on its forecourts by an average of 10.1p per litre, bringing it to 138.91p.
Significant Cost Increases for Motorists
This sharp rise adds approximately £5.56 to the cost of filling a typical 55-litre family car, placing additional financial strain on households already grappling with high living costs. In a further blow to drivers, Asda has also raised diesel prices by an average of 19.86p per litre, now standing at 157.52p, which increases the expense of a full tank by around £10.90.
Asda's Response to Price Hikes
An Asda spokesman defended the increases, stating to the Daily Mail that the company is "offering the cheapest fuel in the UK across its superstore sites and remains focused on keeping prices as low as possible for motorists, despite the steep increase in wholesale costs caused by the unprecedented impact to the fuel market." The spokesperson added that Asda fully supports tools like Fuel Finder to enhance price transparency, with all 792 of its sites included in such initiatives.
Other Retailers Follow Suit
Close behind Asda in terms of price rises is Texaco, which has increased petrol prices by 9.21p per litre, followed by Shell with an 8.82p per litre hike to 144.3p. This trend highlights broader market pressures affecting fuel costs nationwide.
Criticism from Motoring Groups
Hugh Bladon of the Alliance of British Drivers expressed strong criticism, remarking, "As we all know, petrol companies are very quick to put the price up at the slightest excuse, and extremely slow to bring the price down when the conditions demand that to be the case. There is absolutely no reason for anybody to put prices up yet because they’re selling fuel they’ve already paid for and that they’ve had for yonks already. It’s a scandal – they don’t need to put the price up until they are paying inflated prices themselves."
The ongoing war in Iran and the Middle East has created significant disruptions in global fuel markets, leading to wholesale cost spikes that retailers are passing on to consumers. Asda's rapid price adjustments underscore the immediate impact of geopolitical tensions on everyday expenses, urging drivers to stay informed and seek out the best deals amidst fluctuating fuel prices.
