Avoid £100 Passport Mistake: Expert Tips After 2026

British passport holders have been warned about a costly mistake that could add up to £100 to the cost of a new passport following price rises in 2026. BBC Morning Live finance expert Laura Pomfret highlighted the pitfalls during a recent segment, urging people to be vigilant when applying.

Passport Fees Increase in 2026

Pomfret noted that passport fees have risen significantly. A standard online adult passport now costs £102, while a child’s passport is £66.50. However, applying by post increases the cost to £115.50 for an adult — a £15 jump per passport that can quickly add up for families.

Key Savings: Apply Online and Avoid Intermediaries

The first major saving is to apply online directly through HM Passport Office. Pomfret emphasized: “Always go directly to the HM Passport Office. There are intermediary websites that might look official but charge up to £100 just for helping with the application.” She advised using the official site or the Post Office’s check and send service for £16 if unsure.

DIY Passport Photos Save Money

Another tip: take your own passport photo at home. “You don’t have to pay to go into a shop or use a booth. Good lighting, a plain background, and you upload it directly. The system tells you if it’s not good enough,” she said.

By following these steps, families can save substantial amounts, especially when renewing multiple passports. Pomfret concluded: “It’s worth looking at these different ways of saving money because it’s worth it in the long run, especially if you’re getting more than one.”
