British Gas Announces Automatic £117 Energy Bill Reduction for Birmingham Households
British Gas has revealed a significant price drop that will benefit households across Birmingham, with typical dual fuel customers set to save approximately £117 per year starting from April 1. The energy giant, which competes with providers like EDF, EON, Ovo, and Octopus, has confirmed that customers do not need to take any action to receive these savings.
Automatic Savings Without Customer Action
The reductions will be applied automatically to all tariffs, including fixed-rate plans, ensuring that every British Gas customer in the region benefits. According to the company, this change is a direct result of the government's removal of green levies previously added to energy bills. The government has committed to maintaining this policy until 2029, providing long-term relief for consumers.
British Gas stated: "Green levies that were previously added to energy bills have now been removed by the government. This change helps to lower bills on all tariffs, and the government has promised to keep this in place until 2029."
Impact on Household Bills
Following adjustments to April's price cap, a typical dual fuel household can expect their annual energy costs to fall by around £117. However, the exact amount saved will depend on individual energy usage. British Gas employee Paul Lodwidge emphasized this point, advising households: "How much you save will depend on your actual energy usage."
He added: "We'll automatically lower your prices from April 1, so you can start saving straight away. There's nothing you need to do."
Broader Context and Support
In addition to the price reduction, British Gas is monitoring global events and wholesale energy prices closely, with updates to be shared on their website. The company acknowledges the current uncertainty in the energy market but assures customers that their rates are protected for the price cap period from April 1 to June 30.
The British Gas website further notes: "We know the energy market feels uncertain right now, but we’ll keep you updated as things unfold. Rest assured your rates are protected for the current price cap period (1 April - 30 June). And that we have lots of help and support available for customers who need it."
This move is part of a broader effort to alleviate financial pressures on households amid the ongoing energy crisis, with the government's £150 reduction in energy bills also contributing to lower costs. The automatic application of savings ensures that all British Gas customers in Birmingham can access this relief without any hassle.
