BT Landline Bills to Increase by £1 Monthly from March 31
Hundreds of thousands of BT customers across the UK, including households in Birmingham, are set to face a new price increase on their landline bills starting March 31, 2026. The telecoms giant has confirmed that landline-only customers will see their monthly line rental costs rise by £1, marking a significant change for those who rely solely on traditional phone services.
Specific Price Changes for Landline Customers
The increase will affect two main groups of BT landline customers. Those with Standard Line Rental will see their monthly bill rise from £12.09 to £13.09, while customers with Line Rental Plus will experience an increase from £14.09 to £15.09 per month. This translates to an annual increase of £12 for all affected customers.
Importantly, BT has stated that there will be no increase in call charges for 12 months following March 31, 2026. This measure aims to provide some relief to customers who frequently use their landlines for calls.
Scope and Impact of the Price Hike
The change specifically targets hundreds of thousands of individuals who have a BT landline but do not subscribe to broadband services with BT or any other provider. This demographic often includes older adults or those in areas with limited internet access, making the price hike particularly impactful for vulnerable communities.
BT operates in a competitive market, rivalled by major providers such as Sky, EE, and TalkTalk. The price increase has drawn attention from regulatory bodies, with broadcasting watchdog Ofcom announcing plans to monitor BT's pricing for landline-only customers as part of its regular consumer price oversight.
BT's Justification and Regulatory Context
A BT spokesperson explained the company's position, stating, "We are committed to keeping our customers and the UK connected, with dedicated landline services that deliver value for those who continue to rely on these services. This helps ensure customers retain access to a reliable phone service, supported by clear pricing and best in class customer support."
The price adjustment follows BT's announcement in January 2026 that it would align with UK government guidance to move customers onto price changes with clear pounds and pence amounts instead of inflation-linked rises. This shift aims to provide greater transparency in billing practices.
Customer Notifications and Contract Details
BT clarified that the price change will apply to out-of-contract customers, with notifications being sent in the coming weeks. The company emphasized that these customers will not be entered into new minimum-term contracts and that those within contract periods will not see annual price adjustments, a practice that has recently faced scrutiny.
As the March 31 deadline approaches, affected customers are advised to review their billing statements and contact BT for specific information regarding their individual pricing changes.
