Ecology Building Society Launches First UK High Street Branch in Porth
Ecology Building Society, the UK's youngest building society established in 1981, is set to open its first-ever physical high street branch in the Valleys next week. The Yorkshire-headquartered mutual has transformed a former hardware store on Hannah Street in Porth, Rhondda Cynon Taf, into a modern banking hub, with plans to expand to more locations across the UK.
Renovation and Funding
In partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, Ecology Building Society secured UK Government Shared Prosperity Funding to renovate the building, which had been vacant since June 2025. The society, which serves 15,000 customers online, by post, and via telephone, invested in the project to bring essential financial services back to the local high street.
Branch Features and Services
The new branch will offer face-to-face service for a range of savings and mortgage products. It includes kiosks providing free cash deposit and withdrawal services for both business and retail customers, accessible even to those without Ecology accounts. Additionally, a dedicated community space has been designed into the branch for local groups to host activities.
Innovative Savings Product
To mark the opening, Ecology has launched the community impact saver account, the first of its kind in the area. This easy-access savings account pays a rate of 2%, and the society will donate an amount equivalent to an annual rate of 1% of average monthly balances into a fund. This fund offers grants of up to £500 to eligible good causes in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Job Creation and Expansion Plans
The Porth branch has created three new roles: a branch manager, a community engagement manager, and a branch service specialist. Ecology is currently evaluating several other potential sites in the UK for further physical branches, signaling a commitment to expanding its high street presence.
Leadership and Financial Performance
Gareth Griffiths, chief executive of Ecology Building Society, who is learning Welsh, expressed enthusiasm for the new branch. He stated, "We're looking forward to opening our first-ever branch, bringing essential financial services back to Porth high street for residents and businesses in the area who were deserted by the big bank closures."
He added, "To show our commitment to our new community, we've created the community impact saver account, through which savers can support local charities and other organisations doing good in their area. We know how much people value face-to-face support."
Financially, Ecology reported growth in its 2025 financial year, with total assets increasing from £336.7 million to £347.9 million and saving balances rising from £316.4 million to £325.2 million. The society raised an additional £4.1 million through a second issue of core capital deferred shares, providing capital to support its growing mortgage book and fund commercial projects.
Despite planned investments, Ecology made a modest underlying profit before tax of £418,000 in 2025, compared to £445,000 in 2024. Griffiths noted, "A huge amount of hard work throughout 2025 has set us up for success in 2026. We're the UK's youngest building society and were created to be a pioneer and a disruptor, to challenge the norm in our industry and do business differently."
He concluded, "The delivery of such a pivotal year in our history is testament to the passion and dedication of our fantastic colleagues. Underlying profits remain strong, and we forecast a return to usual levels of profitability in 2027."
