Energy Giants Offer £1,700 Support to Prepayment Meter Customers in Debt
Energy Firms Provide £1,700 Support for Prepayment Meter Debt

Energy Suppliers Launch Major Support Initiatives for Prepayment Meter Customers

Customers of British Gas, OVO, EON, and Octopus Energy are being offered substantial energy bill support packages worth up to £1,700. This comes as approximately 40% of prepayment meter users are currently utilizing these meters to repay existing energy debt, with millions across the United Kingdom facing similar financial pressures annually.

Multiple Support Programs Available

The British Gas Energy Trust's Individuals and Families Fund (I&F) represents one of the most significant support mechanisms available. This program offers grants of up to £1,700 specifically designed for prepayment meter customers struggling with energy debt, regardless of their current energy supplier. These grants are intended to clear arrears and help individuals move toward greater financial stability.

Meanwhile, OVO Energy continues to operate its Extra Support Package, valued at £56 million. This comprehensive scheme includes reductions to direct debit payments, emergency credit top-ups, and extended repayment plans for customers experiencing financial difficulties.

Additional Supplier Assistance

Octopus Energy maintains an assist fund that provides direct financial support to customers facing challenges, while E.ON Next operates its Energy Fund, which offers grants to help cover both gas and electricity bills for those in need.

Eligibility Requirements

British Gas has outlined specific eligibility criteria for their support program. Customers may qualify if they have debt between £50 and £1,700 on a prepayment meter, reside in England, Scotland, or Wales, or have received professional money advice within the previous six months.

Real-World Impact

The I&F program has already made significant differences in people's lives. One recipient, identified as Mr H, is a 56-year-old registered disabled former armed forces veteran living in a local authority property with his non-dependent disabled child.

Both Mr H and his child are unable to work due to their disabilities, relying on Employment & Support Allowance and Personal Independence Payment from the Department for Work and Pensions. Mr H suffers from multiple serious health conditions including combat PTSD and spinal damage requiring a walking aid, with his health unlikely to improve and limiting his ability to increase his income.

While his budget allowed him to cover ongoing energy costs, he was unable to clear his existing arrears. With assistance from Citizens Advice, he applied for support and was awarded an energy grant of £1,290 from the British Gas Energy Trust, providing crucial financial relief.

These support initiatives come at a critical time as many households continue to juggle essential costs including rent, food, and council tax alongside their energy bills. The various programs from major energy suppliers represent important resources for those struggling with energy debt across the country.
