Major Vehicle Recall: Kia and Hyundai Alert 235,000 Drivers
Two of the world's largest automotive manufacturers, Kia and Hyundai, have initiated a significant safety recall affecting approximately 235,000 vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has mandated this action due to serious concerns over potential fuel leaks that could escalate into engine compartment fires.
Kia's Recall Details and Affected Models
Kia is recalling more than 141,000 Carnival models manufactured between 2022 and 2026. The recall stems from a suspected production deviation involving the fuel pipe connection between the fuel pipe and fuel rail. According to the company, this issue may cause the fuel pipe nuts to loosen gradually over time, increasing the risk of fuel leakage.
The recall notice explicitly states: "It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect is remedied." This legal requirement underscores the severity of the safety hazard and ensures that unresolved vehicles cannot be sold or leased.
Hyundai's Recall and Genesis Models Impacted
Hyundai has urgently recalled 94,760 vehicles, including several Genesis models. The affected vehicles are:
- Genesis GV80 (2021-2025)
- Genesis G80 (2021-2025)
- Genesis GV70 (2022-2026)
- Genesis G90 (2023-2025)
The problem involves the crossover fuel pipe connecting the left and right fuel rails. During assembly, retention fasteners were tightened with insufficient concentrations of torque stabiliser, causing the axial force to diminish over time. This can lead to loose connections, allowing fuel to leak and significantly raising the risk of an engine compartment fire.
Required Actions for Vehicle Owners
Owners of the recalled vehicles will receive official notices instructing them to visit authorised dealerships. Technicians will perform a thorough inspection of the crossover fuel pipe and its fasteners. If the connections are secure, they will be retightened; however, if any fuel leak is detected, the entire pipe will be replaced.
