Lloyds Bank has triggered significant alarm among its customer base with the announcement of 95 branch closures across the United Kingdom. This decision has left many patrons feeling "worried and dismayed", particularly impacting communities in locations such as Bournemouth, Wareham, Lymington, and Ringwood.

Local Leaders Express Outrage and Disappointment

Councillor Jacqui England described the closure of her town's branch as "appalling", noting that it will severely affect residents who rely on in-person banking. She emphasized that many of these individuals are from an older generation who have exclusively banked with Lloyds for decades and are uncomfortable with digital alternatives.

"Their families are now spread around the world, so they depend on local branches for their financial needs," Cllr England explained. "A lot of people are embarrassed about not using internet banking, making this closure even more distressing."

Concerns for Vulnerable and Elderly Customers

Cllr Peter Kelleher, representing Ringwood North on the Ringwood Town Council, voiced his sadness and disappointment over the planned closure in Ringwood. He highlighted that this move means no major banks will operate in the town, posing particular challenges for those who do not use online banking.

"I have particular concerns for people who do not use online banking, a significant number of whom are elderly," Cllr Kelleher stated. This sentiment underscores a broader issue of financial exclusion for vulnerable demographics.

Additional Closures and Bank's Response

This latest announcement adds to an ongoing closure programme by Lloyds, which will see 49 more sites shut by October. Once all planned closures are complete, Lloyds will have 610 branches remaining across the UK.

A spokesperson for Lloyds defended the decision, stating, "Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them, and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before." The spokesperson added that over 21 million customers primarily use Lloyds' apps for banking, reflecting a shift towards digital services.
