UK Middle Earners Face £29,000 Stealth Tax Over Nine-Year Freeze
A staggering £29,000 stealth tax toll is set to impact Britain's middle earners, according to a new analysis that lays bare the nine-year cost of frozen income tax thresholds. The Telegraph newspaper's investigation has revealed the eye-watering financial burden facing households across the country.
Who Bears the Brunt of the Freeze?
The analysis shows that anyone with an income between £66,000 and £114,000 today will be £29,114 worse off over the course of the nine-year freeze. Those on the highest salaries of £155,000 or more will face a £17,674 reduction, while an average earner on £41,000 today would have paid an additional £5,720 in tax.
Expert Analysis on Fiscal Drag
Rob Morgan of wealth manager Charles Stanley commented: "Fiscal drag has now become a semi-permanent feature of the system with taxpayers the proverbial boiling frogs and middle earners bearing the brunt. It has accelerated in recent years, primarily owing to government efforts to balance the books by freezing tax thresholds. This clandestine policy is going to take a further toll going forward and do a lot of heavy lifting for the Treasury."
Charlene Young of investment platform AJ Bell added: "Taxpayers have seen the finishing line on the tax freeze marathon extended to 2031. Every single taxpayer with earnings over £12,570 is impacted by the freeze, although exactly how much depends on your earnings. A £75,000 annual pay packet, for example, incurs £17,400 in tax. Were thresholds increased to reflect inflation, the tax bill on £75,000 of income would have dropped to around £12,600 in 2030-31."
Government Response
A Treasury spokesman defended the policy, stating: "The fair and necessary decisions we made at the Budget mean we can deliver support for families and businesses, including cutting the cost of living. The tax paid by a worker with a low or average income is at a historically low level and Brits benefit from the highest Personal Allowance among the G7."
The findings highlight how middle-income households are disproportionately affected by the threshold freeze, with experts warning that the policy represents a significant stealth tax that will continue to impact taxpayers for years to come.
