Rachel Reeves Confirms £640 Car Tax Hike for Luxury Vehicle Owners

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed that drivers of specific high-end car models will be hit with a substantial £640 charge under the latest vehicle excise duty (VED) rates. The DVLA is set to send letters through the post demanding payments from affected motorists, as the new tax amounts came into effect at the start of April.

This change leaves millions of drivers across the UK facing higher tax bills, with the exact amount depending on the car owned. The standard rate of VED has risen by £5 to £200 annually, applying to most cars manufactured after 2017.

Luxury Car Fee Targets Expensive Vehicles

However, owners of more expensive motors—those which cost over £40,000 when new—are subject to a much steeper tax increase. This results in them having to shell out over £400 extra compared to previous rates, culminating in a total annual charge of up to £640.

The additional levy is often referred to as a "luxury" car fee, specifically targeting individuals who have invested more money in their vehicles. According to the RAC, road tax rates are automatically adjusted by the Government in line with inflation each year.

"This means most drivers will pay £200 a year for car tax from April 1, while those with a car that cost over £40,000 when new will pay up to £640," the RAC stated. The tax charges have been raised in connection with inflation for the new financial year, reflecting broader economic adjustments.

The implementation of these rates underscores the Government's approach to aligning motoring costs with inflationary pressures, ensuring that tax revenues keep pace with economic changes. Motorists are advised to check their vehicle details and prepare for the updated payments as the DVLA begins its notification process.
