London's culinary scene is set for a prestigious infusion of talent from the Midlands, as Birmingham's top chef makes a major move to the capital.
Michelin-Starred Expansion to the Capital
Aktar Islam, the acclaimed chef behind Birmingham's only two Michelin-starred restaurant, has announced plans to open a new dining establishment in London. The restaurant, named Oudh 1722, will specialise in the royal Awadhi cuisine of Lucknow, India. The exact location is yet to be formally disclosed but is understood to be situated near the iconic Borough Market, with an anticipated opening in spring 2026.
A Culinary Journey from Aston to Acclaim
Aston-born Aktar Islam is a culinary success story, being one of only four Indian restaurant chefs globally to hold two Michelin Stars. His journey began in his father's restaurant, where he learned the fundamentals of cooking and service. He has since become a pivotal figure in cementing Birmingham's reputation as a premier food destination in Britain through his flagship restaurant, Opheem, on Summer Row.
In an interview with The Staff Canteen, Aktar expressed his deep respect for Awadhi traditions, stating his intention to bring its authentic flavours to London. "With Oudh 1722, the intention is to bring the flavours of Awadh to London, drawing on the techniques, generosity and sense of hospitality that defined the Nawabi courts of Lucknow," he commented.
Championing Birmingham and a New London Chapter
While establishing his new London venture, Aktar remains a staunch advocate for Birmingham's diverse food scene. He has frequently used his platform to praise local gems, from Soho Road's samosas to Tiger Bites Pig and Soi 1268. His inspirational story of turning his life around after leaving school early, culminating in Michelin glory, adds a powerful narrative to his expansion.
The new restaurant is promised to be distinctly different from the modern Indian fine dining of Opheem, focusing instead on the historic richness of Awadhi cooking. This move not only marks a significant step for the chef but also promises to introduce Londoners to a rare and exquisite regional Indian culinary art.
