Swimming through the sheltered waters of a historic Cornish fishing cove, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and heading towards the wild open sea, offered a revelation. It prompted the question: why endure the hassle of airport queues and foreign travel when such beauty exists on our doorstep?
A Family's Cornish Haven
For years, the rugged charm of Cornwall's coastline, with its tempting seafood and smugglers' pubs, has been the backdrop for this family's milestones, both before and after having children. Padstow was an early favourite, with Polzeath later joining the list as a top destination when a passion for surfing developed and was shared with the growing children.
Seeking a new adventure, the family settled on the cove of Port Gaverne. The major attraction was their holiday cottage, Stop Tide, which was literally steps away from the beach. This beautifully furnished, three-bedroom property proved to be the ideal base for a grown-up family holiday, allowing everyone the freedom to please themselves and carry paddleboards the short distance to the shore whenever the mood struck.
Seafood, Pubs, and Film Locations
Port Gaverne itself provided everything they desired, complete with a popular pub and what was described as the best crab ever eaten at the stylish yet laid-back Pilchards restaurant. An added bonus was the proximity to Port Isaac, the filming location for the TV show Doc Martin, just a short walk up the headland.
As a fan of the series, exploring the cobbled streets lined with whitewashed cottages was a delight. Key landmarks were easily spotted, including Dr Ellingham’s surgery, Louisa’s primary school, and Bert and Al’s pub. Despite its fame and the daily summer tours offering behind-the-scenes insights, Port Isaac has pleasingly retained its original charm.
The allure of film locations continued at The Golden Lion, the real-life pub that also featured in the movie Fisherman’s Friends. One evening, the family was drawn inside by the sound of singing and was treated to an impromptu performance of familiar sea shanties by the local lifeboat crew, an experience that was almost as good as seeing the authentic group on tour.
The UK's Top Short Break Destination
According to research by Sykes Holiday Cottages, Port Isaac was recently named the UK’s top short break destination for spring. It's easy to see why, with Cornwall's stunning scenery, homemade pasties, cream teas, and maritime arts and crafts all within reach.
For those wanting to feel the wind in their hair, the coastal walk around the headland offers breathtaking views. A word of caution: for every steep cliff descent, there is an equally arduous climb on the other side. If a day on a white-sand beach is preferred, the surfing mecca of Polzeath is only a short drive away, offering easy beachfront parking for bodyboarding and surfing enthusiasts.
The family concluded that they will definitely be back to create more happy memories. Port Gaverne and Port Isaac have now soared straight to the top of their list of favourite UK destinations.
