Dorset Brewery Founded in 1777 Celebrates 249 Years

A Dorset brewery established just one year after the American Declaration of Independence has celebrated its remarkable longevity. Hall & Woodhouse (H&W), founded in 1777 by farmer Charles Hall in the village of Ansty, marked its 249th anniversary on June 8 with annual Founder’s Day festivities.

Historic Beginnings

When Hall & Woodhouse opened its doors, King George III sat on the British throne. In 1793, as Britain and France went to war, Charles Hall secured a license to supply beer to the Duke of Wellington’s troops stationed in Weymouth. His son Robert later inherited the business and brought Edward Woodhouse on board as a commercial partner.

Family Legacy Continues

Nearly 250 years later, H&W remains family-owned, operating around 150 pubs across southern England. Current directors Anthony Woodhouse and Tatiana Woodhouse represent the seventh and eighth generations to steward the company. Its iconic Badger beer is widely available in major supermarkets such as Waitrose and Sainsbury’s, as well as on Amazon.

Founder’s Day Celebrations

Chairman Anthony Woodhouse described reaching 249 years as a 'remarkable milestone' reflecting the dedication of generations of team members. As part of the celebrations, staff from H&W’s 55 managed houses participated in the annual litter pick. Every employee in the managed estate received a slice of birthday cake and a bottle of the commemorative anniversary beer, Hannah and George Edward’s Kindness, named after key figures in the brewery’s founding history.

'I’m incredibly proud that we continue the tradition of giving back to our local communities that support us, in addition to celebrating our heritage,' Mr Woodhouse said. 'As we look ahead, we’re excited to begin preparations for an even bigger celebration as we approach our 250th anniversary next year.'

Last year, H&W was named the ‘Best Managed Pub Company’ at the Publican Awards.
