Gary Meads, the current proprietor of the historic Coach & Horses Inn, was literally born and raised on the premises, offering a rare perspective on life behind the bar from his earliest days.

Gary's parents first took on the tenancy back in 1968, with Gary arriving the following year in 1969, embedding him in the pub's daily rhythm from infancy.
Speaking candidly about his formative years, Gary shared: "Life growing up was absolutely brilliant. My friends always loved the fact that my parents owned a pub. I became quite adept at handing out Vimto and crisps when I was younger. While I wasn't old enough to play darts, I did get to chalk the scoreboard, which surprisingly helped me with my multiplication tables."
The Social Fabric of Pub Life
Growing up in such a bustling, communal environment had a profound impact on Gary's personality. He noted: "Living in a pub, I simply didn't have the opportunity to be introverted because I was constantly surrounded by people. The Christmas and New Year's Eve parties were particularly spectacular and created truly magical memories for me."
The family's deep connection to the business remains strong to this day. "My parents have lived and breathed this place for over 50 years," Gary explained, "and we continue to serve fantastic ales and delicious homecooked food. My father still helps out regularly and will celebrate his 89th birthday in February. This pub is his passion, his love, and his entire life." Gary added with a smile, "My Dad comes in almost every day to lend a hand. I think Mom insists he takes Sundays off."
