Central Co-op has confirmed it is exploring options for its Hill Top Food store in West Bromwich after identifying challenges affecting the site's long-term financial sustainability. The society is marketing the shop to gauge potential buyer interest, but stressed this does not mean a sale or closure is imminent.
Store review and marketing process
The Hill Top store is currently being marketed as part of a broader review of the society's estate. Central Co-op said the move is intended to "understand whether there may be interest from potential buyers," but customers have been told this "should not be interpreted as a decision to sell or close the store."
A Central Co-op spokesperson explained: "As part of our commitment to building a stronger and more sustainable food business for the future, we continually review the performance of our stores and how we invest the society's resources."
"These reviews help ensure that we are making responsible decisions that create the greatest long-term value for our members, customers, colleagues and communities, while supporting future investment and growth."
Challenges and strategic alternatives
The spokesperson added: "We have identified that our Hill Top store in West Bromwich is facing challenges that are affecting its long-term financial sustainability." As a result, the society is actively exploring a range of options for the store's future and assessing the best way to maximise the value it can deliver to members and the local community.
Central Co-op said it would "continue to consider other strategic alternatives" for the store, including opportunities to improve performance, different operating approaches, investment options and, where there is active member interest, community ownership.
Staff informed and store trading as usual
Store staff have been informed of the review and would continue to be kept in the loop as it progresses. The spokesperson confirmed: "No decision has been made regarding the future of the store. It remains open and continues to trade as usual while this work is undertaken."
The announcement follows recent changes in the West Bromwich area, including the closure of Big John's branch ahead of "major changes." Central Co-op's review is part of a wider effort to ensure responsible investment of society resources across its food business.
