Michelin-Starred Chef Aktar Islam to Launch New Indian Restaurant in Bristol
Renowned Midlands chef Aktar Islam, holder of two prestigious Michelin stars, is expanding his culinary footprint with a new Indian restaurant in Bristol. The establishment, named Kush Bristol, will be situated in the former home of The Mint Room on Clifton Road in the Clifton area, though an exact opening date has not yet been finalized.
Preparation and Anticipation for the Launch
The announcement follows a special supper club series promoted on OpenTable in January, which generated significant buzz among food enthusiasts. Currently, the shopfront on Clifton Road appears ready for an imminent launch, signaling the restaurant's upcoming debut. The Mint Room, another Indian restaurant that previously occupied the space, closed its doors in 2024 after nearly a decade of operation, as reported by Bristol Live.
Aktar Islam, who has gained fame through appearances on television programmes such as Saturday Morning Kitchen and Great British Menu, already operates the two-Michelin-star restaurant Opheem in Birmingham. In preparation for the supper club series, Aktar and his team emphasized the communal spirit of Indian dining, stating:
"Bristol is all about community, and these evenings are rooted in the way Indian meals are meant to be enjoyed: communally, with shared plates, shared stories, and the kind of warmth that turns fellow epicureans into friends."
Inspiration and Vision Behind Kush Bristol
The chef elaborated on his culinary philosophy, explaining that food was never just sustenance during his upbringing but a ritual filled with laughter, debates over spice levels, and the comfort of homely dishes. This ethos is central to Kush Bristol, aiming to create intimate dining experiences that foster connection and enjoyment.
Each evening at the restaurant will feature a generous feast inspired by recipes from across the Indian subcontinent. The menu will include both familiar favorites and rare regional delicacies, each dish crafted to carry the soul and memory of its origin, offering diners a unique and authentic culinary journey.
Social Media Buzz and Industry Excitement
The Kush by Aktar Islam Instagram account made its first post in September 2024, shortly after The Mint Room's closure, hinting at the exciting development with the message: "Something exciting coming soon..." Further excitement was generated when the Curry Society UK Instagram page shared a post revealing fresh signage on the window of the former Mint Room, displaying 'Kush by Aktar Islam.'
The Curry Society, which referred to Aktar Islam as the 'enfant terrible' of the Indian culinary world, expressed widespread enthusiasm, noting: "This is big news and all our friends in the restaurants game in and around Bristol are all so excited, without exception. Welcome to Bristol, Chef Islam!" This sentiment highlights the high anticipation and positive reception within the local and national food industry for this new venture.
