Efteling, the Netherlands' largest theme park, is accessible via a £29 short flight from Birmingham International Airport, and park enthusiasts argue it offers a cheaper and less commercialised alternative to Disneyland Paris. Day tickets cost approximately £45, and the resort is open every day of the year, including winter when snowfall enhances its magical atmosphere.
The park, which first opened in 1952, ranks among the oldest theme parks in the world. While it lacks the specific Disney brand of magic, Efteling delivers its own fantasy world theme rooted in folklore, whimsical fables, myths, and legends. Visitors can stay in themed hotels, meet characters, and enjoy rides suited to both younger children and thrill-seekers.
What Efteling offers families and thrill-seekers
For older children, adults, and the bravest young visitors, the park features rollercoasters and other adrenaline rides. For those seeking a gentler experience, there are 'spectacular' park shows with fairytale characters and storytelling. The park also includes a fairytale forest, which visitors describe as lovely, with shorter queues and dark rides ideal for younger children.
Efteling is nestled in nature and steeped in myth, with wintery woodland escapes available during sleepovers. During the winter season, guests will not encounter Santa Claus, but instead find decorated trees, lights, and bonfires, as the park's theming leans into a more traditional, otherworldly atmosphere.
How to get there and ticket options
From Birmingham, visitors can either drive—a journey of approximately six hours—or fly from Birmingham International to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, a flight of about an hour, with regular bus connections to the park. Tickets are priced at €54, roughly £45, providing all-day access with seasonal events and experiences.
Alternatively, Hop On Hop Off bus journeys from Amsterdam combine transport and entry tickets, with packages typically costing less than €90 in total. These options are worth comparing to find the best deal.
What fans say comparing Efteling and Disneyland
Members of the Efteling Fans UK group highlight that while Disney is brilliant and worth visiting if possible, Efteling offers a unique experience. Robin Hemerik said: "What I love most about the Efteling is the atmosphere, they really nail that 'other-worldly' feeling. Disney is Disney, Efteling leans more into Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Labyrinth (1986)/Dark Crystal, Jim Henson, Stan Winston kind of territory. They are clever with their theming, for example during Winter Efteling you won't run into Santa but you will see decorated trees, lights and bonfires. Santa would feel out of place!"
Hayley Laura, who tried Efteling for the first time this year after many Disney visits, said: "Efteling is less commercialised, has some great rides and is great that you can meet characters in the morning with just a few minutes to wait. The fairytale forest is lovely, queues and shorter and some great dark rides, ideal for younger children. Disney is more pricey, there is a huge choice of characters to meet but queues are long (an hour on average at peak times). Some great rides again, lots for younger children and the highlight for me is the parades and night show. It's worth trying both, just a matter of which you do first."
With summer feeling distant and Christmas approaching, Efteling presents a practical option for families in Birmingham seeking a magical short break without the premium costs associated with Disneyland Paris. The park's year-round opening and seasonal programming provide concrete reasons to consider it as a winter destination.
