A cherished Midlands pub, once crowned the local 'Pub of the Year', will pull its final pints tonight, Monday, January 5, 2026, ending a remarkable history spanning 174 years.
'Gutted' Owners Announce Sudden Closure
The Druid Inn in Birchover is set to shut its doors permanently this evening. The decision was confirmed by the pub's owners, the Stanton Estate, leaving the current managers and the community reeling.
Mercer and his wife Gypsy, who took over the running of the establishment just six months ago, expressed their profound disappointment. They stated they were "gutted" by the estate's verdict, which leaves staff facing an uncertain new year.
A Troubled History and Community Heartbreak
The closure marks the end of a turbulent period for the historic venue, which reportedly saw nine different tenants come and go over the past 15 years. Despite this instability, The Druid Inn remained a firm favourite with locals, earning the prestigious Matlock and Dales CAMRA Pub of the Year award in 2017.
News of the shutdown has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media. One devastated regular posted on Facebook, saying it felt like losing a "second home," while others fondly recalled milestone meals, first drinks, and family trips associated with the pub's unique atmosphere and renowned menu.
Final Service and Last Orders
The venue will operate for one last day today. Final drinks will be served from 12pm until 9pm, with the kitchen offering its usual food service between 5pm and 7.30pm, allowing patrons a final chance to say goodbye.
The sudden closure of such a long-standing and award-winning community hub underscores the continuing challenges faced by the UK's pub sector, leaving a significant void in the heart of Birchover.
