Recent Openings to Explore

Sushidog made its debut on January 31 in the Bullring's upper mall, marking its first location outside London. This kiosk-style spot specialises in customisable sushi rolls served like burritos, along with bowls and salads. It has quickly become a hit for shoppers seeking a fresh, healthy alternative to typical high street options, with MasterChef contestant Dan Lee contributing to its flavour development.

Vieni opened on February 7 in the Goodsyard development in the Jewellery Quarter. This female-led independent Sicilian restaurant seats 40 diners and features a menu inspired by a real Sicilian nonna, offering an intimate atmosphere and authentic dishes that have received glowing reviews from local food critics.

Alfred Works launched on February 20 in Digbeth, becoming Birmingham's largest food hall at 17,500 square feet. It houses 15 independent kitchens, including local favourite Esmie's Caribbean Kitchen and unique offerings like Palestinian cuisine. The venue also hosts the Blend Culinary Foundation, which includes a cookery school aimed at addressing food poverty.

Monty's expanded this month with a second branch on Bennetts Hill, taking over the former Philpotts site. Known for affordable sandwiches and carvery rolls, most menu items are priced under £5, making it a popular choice for office workers. Asha's Indian Street Food opened on March 16 inside the Society food hall at One Colmore Square. This new concept from the Michelin Guide-listed restaurant offers casual street-style dishes like chicken paratha rolls and Delhi samosa chaats, providing a more relaxed alternative to their formal flagship location.

Upcoming Venues to Watch

Blacklock Chophouse is set to launch on April 20 at St Philips House on Cathedral Square, following delays due to the restoration of a historic Victorian vicarage. The 100-seat steak restaurant will feature charcoal-grilled chops and signature cheesecake, with drinks including exclusive Blacklock Brews made in collaboration with Birmingham Brewing Company.

Flat Iron is scheduled to open this summer on Temple Street, spanning two floors with seating for 110 diners. The menu will focus on their £14 flat iron steak and beef-dripping chips, using meat from the brand's own Yorkshire herd.

Craft and Culture cafe bar will open on April 2 at the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter on Vyse Street. Reflecting the area's history, it will serve food and drink while doubling as a workshop space for community enrichment.

Maki and Ramen is planned for the ground floor of the newly-renovated King Edward House on New Street. This Japanese noodle spot will be located near the old Pizza Hut site, though an exact opening date has not yet been announced.
