UK Passport Fees Increase from April 8: Adult Passport Now Over £100
Passport Fees Rise: Adult Passport Over £100 from April 8

The Home Office has announced a significant increase in passport application fees, effective from April 8, marking the third consecutive year of price adjustments. This change will see the cost of an adult passport rise above £100 for the first time, impacting travellers across the country.

New Passport Fees from April 8

From April 8, standard online applications for adults will increase from £94.50 to £102, while children's passports will rise by £5 to £66.50. For those applying by post, adult fees will go up from £107 to £115.50, and children's from £74 to £80.

Premium and Overseas Services

The one-day Premium Service will see a substantial hike, moving from £222 to £239.50. Families living abroad are also affected, with standard adult online applications from overseas increasing from £108 to £116.50.

Home Office Explanation

The Home Office provided a detailed explanation for the updated pricing structure. "The new fees will help the Home Office to continue to move towards a system that meets its costs through those who use it, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation," a spokesperson stated.

The Government does not make any profit from passport applications. The fees contribute to processing costs, consular support overseas for lost or stolen passports, and processing British citizens at UK borders.

Moving Towards User-Funded System

This adjustment is part of a broader shift towards a user-funded system, where service users cover the full cost of processing rather than relying on taxpayers. Officials have confirmed that nearly all standard applications—99.7% in 2025—were completed within three weeks, provided no extra information was needed.

Impact on Travellers

If you are planning a holiday this year, it is crucial to check your passport expiry date immediately to avoid these higher fees. You will need to allocate extra room in your travel budget if submitting an application after the April 8 deadline.

These new prices apply universally, whether applying for yourself or for your children. The increase is attributed to rising administrative costs associated with international travel documentation.
