Sutton Coldfield Pub Temporarily Closes for Extensive £183,000 Makeover

A highly-rated Sutton Coldfield pub has closed its doors for several weeks to undergo a substantial £183,000 refurbishment, timed perfectly for the upcoming football World Cup this summer. The Pint Pot, located on Tower Road in Mere Green, ceased operations on Thursday, March 26, as it prepares for a comprehensive facelift aimed at enhancing its appeal as a sports and community venue.

Investment in Sports and Community Focus

Star Pubs, the Heineken-owned operator, is spearheading the investment to refresh the pub's appearance and significantly upgrade its sports facilities. The goal is to transform The Pint Pot into a family-friendly local establishment with a strong emphasis on sports, entertainment, and community events. New manager Angela Constable, a former NHS worker, is taking over with her husband John, and they are eager to make the pub the heart of the Mere Green community.

Key upgrades include:

  • A new halo-lit darts board with electronic scoring
  • A new pool table featuring wi-fi enabled payment systems
  • Five new High-Definition televisions
  • A state-of-the-art audio-visual system for broadcasting Sky and TNT Sports

Angela Constable expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "John and I are really looking forward to meeting regulars and to becoming part of the Mere Green community. We want the pub to be somewhere everyone can relax and enjoy themselves." The couple plans to host local groups, sports teams, live entertainment, quizzes, and charity fundraisers, aiming to create a welcoming environment for families and even dogs.

Interior and Exterior Enhancements

The refurbishment will feature a redesigned interior with an open-plan bar and lounge area, alongside a separate sports room equipped with the new pool table and drinks shelving. New high "poseur" style tables and stools will be installed in the bar, while the lounge will offer relaxed mid-height seating. The décor will be updated to a more contemporary and smarter style, creating a fresher, inviting atmosphere for patrons.

Externally, the pub will be redecorated in deep blue and cream colours, complemented by new signage to give it a smarter appearance. Seating for 28 people will be available at the front with A-frame tables, benches, and umbrellas, perfect for outdoor enjoyment.

Technological and Environmental Improvements

As part of the revamp, The Pint Pot will incorporate the latest dispense technology, which Star Pubs claims improves the quality and consistency of draft beer and cider. This system features unique cooling technology and line insulation that is 20% more energy-efficient than standard setups, ensuring beverages stay colder while reducing environmental impact.

Craig Foweather, Star Pubs investment manager, commented, "We're delighted to be upgrading The Pint Pot, building on its popularity and giving residents nicer surroundings in which to relax and enjoy themselves. The upgraded sports facilities, new AV system, and facelift, plus a great schedule of entertainment will broaden The Pint Pot's appeal."

Reopening Timeline and Community Impact

The pub is scheduled to reopen by the end of April, just in time for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend and the start of the football World Cup, where England and Scotland will be competing. With a current 4.7 out of five rating on TripAdvisor and ranking as the second-best nightlife spot in Sutton Coldfield, the upgrades are expected to further boost its reputation.

Angela added, "We can't wait to open the doors at the end of April, introduce ourselves, and to show customers their new-look local." The refurbishment represents a significant investment in local amenities, aiming to create a vibrant hub for sports fans and community members alike in Sutton Coldfield.
