Traitors Game Meets Country Luxury at Shropshire's Marrington Estate

Imagine gazing over endless fields toward the Welsh hills, watching the sunset from a picturesque Shropshire country cottage. This was the serene experience at Calcot Cottage, part of the Marrington Estate, where our multi-generational group found an ideal retreat.

A Picturesque Haven

Calcot Cottage proved picture-postcard gorgeous from the moment we arrived. The four-bedroom property sleeps eight in luxury, offering total privacy amidst gardens where pheasant chicks wandered unfazed by visitors. The cottage features two sitting rooms with comfortable sofas and a huge farmhouse kitchen equipped with every modern gadget. A definite highlight was how warm and cosy the entire property felt.

Traitors and Faithfuls Unite

Thoughtful touches included outdoor and indoor games for all ages, most notably a Traitors board game perfect for testing deception tactics. Imagine playing this with a larger group at Marrington Hall, the estate's spectacular late 16th-century listed country house that sleeps fourteen. The main residence also boasts a solar-heated swimming pool, firepit, and croquet lawn.

At Calcot Cottage, the large patio hot tub provided particular enjoyment. Even in autumn, swimsuit-clad humans loudly enjoyed its soothing, bubbly waters while pheasant chicks looked on curiously.

Exploring the Estate and Beyond

Guests at all Marrington properties enjoy access to stunning countryside in Shropshire's southwestern corner. Steps from Calcot Cottage's front door, a private gate leads to estate walks including a steep forest path down to a breathtaking gorge.

Comprehensive information from the owners helps with exploring further walking trails, including Offa's Dyke Path that traces the ancient border between Shropshire and Wales. This border country has seen centuries of English-Welsh cooperation and conflict, making it sometimes difficult to know which country you're in.

Historic Powis Castle

One brilliant reason to venture into Wales is Powis Castle in Welshpool, a short drive away. This medieval castle built in 1200 sits high above the Severn Valley with extensive terraced gardens. The collection of dramatic yew topiary includes specimens over 300 years old lining the outer walls.

Inside the castle, highlights include The State Bedroom with rich textiles and gilding, The Clive Museum containing treasures from India, the stunning Long Gallery filled with paintings, and the Grand Staircase with ornate carved woodwork.

Dining Recommendations

After exploring Powis Castle, we secured the last table reservation at The Nags Head Inn in Garthmyl. The award-winning eatery offers an extensive menu from steaks to fish and chips and venison, with kid-friendly options served by efficient, friendly staff.

In nearby Montgomery, the five-star Checkers Restaurant provides another interesting option, though more suitable for special occasions.
