Foreign Office Issues Updated Travel Advice for Laos with New Digital Rule
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel guidance for Laos, a popular Asian holiday destination, introducing a critical new regulation for all foreign visitors. This update, issued on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, mandates that tourists complete a digital immigration form within a strict timeframe before their trip.
Mandatory Digital Immigration Form Implementation
All international travelers entering Laos must now complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) digitally within three days prior to arrival and again within three days before departure. This new system replaces traditional paper arrival and departure cards at key entry points, including Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport, and the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I.
Important Note: The LDIF does not substitute for visa requirements. Travelers must still obtain appropriate visas separately.
Updated Visa Regulations and Extension Policies
Since January 1, 2025, tourist visas for Laos have reverted to a standard 30-day validity from the date of arrival. Visitors can apply for an e-visa online at least five days in advance, which is valid for single entry at major ports. Alternatively, single-entry visas on arrival remain available at many entry points.
Notably, tourists are now permitted to extend their visas twice while in Laos, allowing for an additional 60 days. However, failure to extend within 90 days results in severe penalties: a fine equivalent to 2,000 US dollars in Lao kip, deportation to one's home country, and a ban on returning to Laos.
Essential Passport Requirements for Entry
To ensure smooth entry into Laos, travelers must verify their passport meets specific criteria:
- The passport must have an expiration date at least six months after the arrival date in Laos.
- At least two blank pages are required for immigration stamps.
- Airlines may deny boarding if these conditions are not met.
It is crucial to check with your travel provider regarding passport and document requirements and renew your passport if necessary. Entry will be denied for invalid documents or passports reported lost or stolen.
This updated advice from the FCDO aims to help UK tourists prepare adequately for their journeys to Laos, avoiding disruptions during the busy summer holiday season.
